‘Delicate but Durable’, 2023

‘Delicate but Durable’ reflects on the impressionable stage of childhood. A child’s curiosity for the world is seemingly boundless – constantly investigating and asking questions about the world around them. But without proper attention and patient nurture, this curiosity and inquisitive nature for the unknown can be suppressed. In the work, the drawings were attentively made with countless strokes of a watercolour pencil and each piece of tape was carefully placed. Yet, the folds and wrinkles that have been left accidentally also mark the paper. Every moment spent making, handling, transporting and installing the work has left an impression on the rice paper, whether intentional or not. Ultimately, ‘Delicate but Durable’ is an invitation: to reflect on how our own childhood has shaped us and to rekindle the connection with our inner child.
